Muvhango's future bleak

The cast of Muvhango still don't have new contracts

SABC 2 soapie Muvhango, which started airing on television 27 years ago, seems to be dying a slow death. The SABC has been blue ticking the soapie's producers by keeping them guessing if they will extend their contract or not.

NO CONTRACTS YET

Contracts were meant to be signed in March, which is the end of the financial year, but nothing happened. The soapie creator Duma Ndlovu and his team were busy negotiating with the producers and the actors. In trying to make an impressive return in the new season, the soapie also engaged singer and former Muvhango actress, Maduvha Madima, who played the role of Vele Rambulana. A source said Maduvha, who turned 42 last month, turned down the role. "She was not happy with the contract offered to her. She felt disrespected because she knows her worth as an actor and a singer," said the source. The SABC is said to be dragging its feet in offering Muvhango a new contract because they allegedly want powerful storylines.

"You must remember that Maduvha is not like one of those struggling artists. She's been acting for many years, as well as performing at different shows. Maduvha is a United Nations Ambassador for Global Safety campaign and a GBV Ambassador for Progressive Professionals. So, it's Muvhango which needs her more to boost their profile since their show is slowly dying," the source added.

SAVE OUR JOBS

An SABC insider said they have been patient enough with Duma since he put his energy on the show Modjadji - The Rain Queen, to be shown on Mzansi Magic. "Duma should meet with the SABC and save our jobs at Muvhango," said an actor who chose not to be mentioned for fear of reprisals. Some of the actors from Muvhango have joined other production companies, with others presenting on some shows. Duma Ndlovu refused to comment. "Don't you get tired of trying to destroy me," he said. SABC spokesperson, Monnie Seopela, said she was trying to find out more on the matter from relevant authorities.
