Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi had initially planned to unveil his provincial executive team to lead Gauteng for the next five years on Sunday afternoon but decided to postpone the announcement just two hours before the scheduled time.
Responding to social media users who asked him why his announcement of executives was cancelled, Lesufi responded: "Negotiators need more time, Unfortunately, these are not usual negotiations. They're complicated." In an article by IOL, reports state that sources confirmed to them that President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed Lesufi to include members of the DA in his provincial cabinet, however, Lesufi have disputed the report. "No such thing happened. It's your imagination. This is cheap propaganda. Sad indeed". Following negotiations between the ANC and the DA after the May 29 elections, Lesufi was reinstated as Premier after the ANC failed to secure a majority in the province with 36.49% of the votes.
In an interview with eNCA, Lesufi said some of the discussions were heavy and difficult. "No one can make reference to history on these matters, and no one can claim to be an expert. We have to give it the time needed to resolve the matter as speedily as possible. I am impatient because the consequences are severe. At this moment there are no MECs. I am the only one. Hospitals need something, roads need to be fixed, and many other things. Education needs to be attended to. I'm very hopeful that before the end of next week, we should have established government in our province and should have established government nationally." Meanwhile, executive council members have been appointed in seven provinces, leaving only Gauteng and the Northern Cape yet to make their appointments. Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul will be announcing his cabinet tomorrow.
