The family of a police officer who went missing and was later found murdered want answers on what happened to their son.
Constable Bonginkosi Bhobho (29) years old from Centane in the Eastern Cape and based at Khayelitsha Police Station in Cape Town, Western Cape, was allegedly kidnapped from his rented room in Khayelitsha on Thursday while he was doing laundry. His sister, Weziwe Bhobho, told ZiMoja that she received a call from her other brother informing him that he could not get hold of Bonginkosi. She said he became worried when his house mate called and informed him that there was no sign of Bonginkosi, yet his door was wide open but the burglar was locked. "The house mate told my younger brother it was unusual that Bonginkosi be unreachable on his cellphone," she said. Weziwe further added, "We then asked the him to investigate further as he had to leave their residence to go to the gym. When the house mate came back, he went to search again in Bonginkosi's room and still, there was no sign of him. On Friday we asked the him to go and report the matter and that is when they filed a missing person's report."
Weziwe said that the family found out through social media that Bonginkosi had been shot and killed at Crossroads in Khayelitsha after his picture was circulated. "We learned about a guy who was found shot in the head and the leg in Crossroads on Facebook. We checked it out and we were able to recognise him. We suspect that he was working on the recent rise of murder cases that have been happening in Khayelitsha. He hinted to one of our brothers that there was too much crime in Khayelitsha and that he wanted to move away from it or get a transfer back to Eastern Cape," she said.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Captain Frederick Van Wyk, confirmed that a murder case was opened at Philippi East SAPS on Thursday, 20 June 2024. He said SAPS members on patrol were stopped by community members at the corner of Sheffield and Govan Mbeki Roads, Luzuko, Philippi-East. They then pointed out a body of an unidentified male who was laying in the field with a gunshot wound to his head. "The deceased did not have any valuables or identification in his possession. It was unknown what transpired and a robbery is suspected. Enquiries on the scene were made but with no positive information. The deceased was positively identified by his family at Salt River Mortuary as the Constable from SAPS Philippi who was reported as missing," he said. Van Wyk said the case is currently under investigation and no arrests have been made.
