A police officer has shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and the woman's cousin before taking his own life. This comes less than a week after another cop from KwaZulu Natal killed his ex-fianc? and her current boyfriend before he also killed himself.
On Sunday, Siviwe Ncanywa (23) from Wesley in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape was allegedly shot and killed outside a local tavern together with her cousin Siyabonga Malimani (35) by her jealous ex. The ex, a police officer, was allegedly not accepting that Siviwe dumped him. When he found her sitting with her cousin at the tavern, he asked her to accompany him outside and when she refused, he dragged her.
Their aunt, Danyiswa Ncanywa, who is also a local ward councillor told ZiMoja that the news of Siviwe and Siyabonga's passing has left them distraught. "I was home when I received a call from their other cousin to inform me about them being shot. I was informed that Siviwe wanted to break up with the police officer, but he wouldn't hear of it. They began dating last year and then they started having problems which forced her to end their relationship. The police officer then began being obsessed with Siviwe and started stalking her everywhere she went," Ncanywa said. She said Siviwe was with her cousins when the cop ex-boyfriend entered the tavern and dragged her outside. Ncanywa said that when Siyabonga saw that the cop was dragging Siviwe, he followed them outside and tried to intervene. "The police officer pointed a firearm at him and ordered Siyabonga to walk away or he would shoot him. The cop then shot a warning shot and I think Siyabonga did not take him seriously." The police boyfriend allegedly shot Siyabonga in the chest. Minutes later he shot Siviwe also in the chest and the head. "Both of them were declared dead on the scene," she said.
EC SAPS spokesperson Colonel Priscila Naidu confirmed that the police were investigating an incident where three people, including a police officer, were found dead with gunshot wounds. "It is alleged that on Sunday evening while on duty, a 34-year-old Constable from SAPS Bell entered a local tavern in Wesley location in Bell and aggressively demanded his girlfriend to accompany him outside. Her cousin followed her outside. Shots were fired, fatally wounding the girlfriend, Siviwe and her cousin Siyabonga. The police officer then drove off. It is alleged that this tragedy was motivated by jealousy. "In the wee hours of Monday morning, the police official shot himself in Mooifontein gravel road in Port Alfred. Police are investigating two cases of murder and an inquest," she said.
