ANC says the majority of political parties have joined Government of National Unity

Fikile Mbalula says they are ready for GNU

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has announced that the majority of parties have accepted their proposal to join the Government of National Unity (GNU). Mbalula was giving an update on the outcomes of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting this evening.

ENGAGING VARIOUS PARTIES

Mbalula said that the ANC has engaged with opposition parties like the Democratic Alliance, Patriotic Alliance, United Democratic Movement, Inkatha Freedom Party and National Freedom Party. All the parties have agreed to join the GNU. "We've reached a breakthrough and the majority of parties agreed that we need to work together. We are not happy that we performed the way we did. We have to accept the outcome of the elections because it is what the people of South Africa want, they want us to work with other people," Mbalula said.

NO RETREAT

Mbalula said the ANC is not going to retreat on the concept of Government of National Unity. "We have had exploratory discussions with the MK Party, and we are still waiting for them to come back to us. If we work together, it must not be transactional, don't come to us and tell us that you want this and that. We have not agreed with the EFF on the issue of GNU," he said. Meanwhile, the EFF and the NFP also announced their stance on the GNU today.

NO POSITION, NO DEAL

EFF leader Julius Malema said he met with President Cyril Ramaphosa where he outlined their terms and conditions if they join the GNU. The EFF said that it was not against the GNU but wants two positions in which they will nominate Veronica Mente as a candidate for Speaker and Floyd Shivambu as the Chairperson of the Finance Committee. "I made it clear to President Ramaphosa that if they don't offer us those positions, then they must count us out from the GNU," Malema said. "I indicated to the President this morning that any other move outside the MK Party is a provocation to the people of KZN and we must not blame them if they were to react. We are of belief that MKP should be in charge of KZN. If you want peace in KZN, allow the MKP to govern KZN," he said.
